OUR MISSION

Since 1994, the Monsoon Accessorize Trust has been supporting projects that impact the most disadvantaged and vulnerable women and children in communities across Asia. It’s our mission to help provide education, healthcare and employment initiatives which directly benefit the artisans who are involved in the Monsoon Accessorize supply chain.

I wanted to give back to the communities we trade in, specifically to women and underprivileged children.

PETER SIMON, FOUNDER

My original objective was to tackle the key issues of healthcare and education.

CURRENT PROJECTS

PAST PROJECTS

INCOME GENERATION

Thanks to a new water pump, Narayn can now farm more than six times as much land than he could before.

INCOME GENERATION

Nirmala was a housewife until she opened the very first shop in her local village.

EDUCATION

Khuma was the first person in his family to go to university. He is now a teacher.

EDUCATION

Nisha attends our Residential Learning Camp where she also receives regular health checks.

EMPOWERMENT

Valkibai is a leading member of the Women’s Resource Centre and is a fully-trained family counsellor.

HEALTHCARE

Sita was six months pregnant when she received vital medical care at an immunisation camp.

INCOME GENERATION

Thanks to a new water pump, Narayn can now farm more than six times as much land than he could before.

Narayn let the other local farmers in Rajpur village to use his well to pump water to their adjoining fields. But uneven surfaces often meant that water couldn’t reach 85% of the land. With help from the Trust, the well was made deeper and a new lift pump was installed. The farmers now give Narayan a small portion of their total production, which is part-invested back into running costs, as well as donated to the village fund.

INCOME GENERATION

Nirmala was a housewife until she opened the very first shop in her local village.

Nirmala always wanted to open a shop in the small rural village of Shisvi. But being a housewife, she had no money of her own and her husband was reluctant to support her. After applying for a small loan from the Trust, Nirmala was finally able to launch her venture, with her new-found confidence allowing her to become more integrated in her local community.

EDUCATION

Khuma was the first person in his family to go to university. He is now a teacher.

Born into a poor family in a remote village, Khuma’s first step into education was through our Residential Learning Camp. Here, he learnt basic maths and literacy skills which meant he could enrol in the public education system. He has since returned to his village to teach in the local school while studying part-time for his BA in History.

EDUCATION

Nisha attends our Residential Learning Camp where she also receives regular health checks.

Nisha, 11, had never been to school before she started attending the Residential Learning Camp. Along with the rest of her peers, Nisha is given clothes, food and basic education, as well as weekly health checks which recently helped diagnose a cataract in her eye. The Trust arranged for her to have an operation to help save her sight, at no cost to her family.

EMPOWERMENT

Valkibai is a leading member of the Women’s Resource Centre and is a fully-trained family counsellor.

Having received extensive training by one of our partners, Valkibai and her colleagues provide much-needed counselling and support to women in abusive relationships. Empowered with the knowledge to investigate suspected crimes, the centre is often the first port of call for women in need.

HEALTHCARE

Sita was six months pregnant when she received vital medical care at an immunisation camp.

Sita, who lives in village of Badoliya, visited the monthly immunisation camp that was set up by the Trust. Here, she received healthcare which helped saved the life of her and her baby, followed by a course of antenatal care, nutritional advice and basic hygiene practices.

GRENFELL TOWER FIRE

Within hours of the disaster, Monsoon Accessorize Ltd donated £100,000 to the survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire in West London.

On 14th June 2017, Grenfell Tower, a 24-storey tower block located in our local community, broke into flames, taking the lives of 71 people and leaving many more seriously injured. Within hours, Monsoon Accessorize Ltd donated £100,000 to the survivors of the tragedy, and partnered with The Big Give to ensure that every donation we received was matched pound-to-pound. We also distributed much-needed clothes, toiletries and medical supplies, as well as providing storage space to help organise the donations. Our annual summer party was restructured to generate further funds for the community and, lastly, we teamed up with local charities such as The Curve and the Rugby Portobello Trust to donate clothes and Christmas presents to our neighbours from Grenfell.
“The community spirit was lovely to see, everyone came out to offer support and people really pulled together.” Dawn Pine, Group HR Director.

PHILIPPINES TYPHOON

Together with Christian Aid, the Trust provided rescue services, food, shelter and medicine to families caught in the Philippines typhoon.

Over 14 million people were affected by the Philippines typhoon in 2013, with many losing their homes and, tragically, over 5,000 fatalities. By partnering with Christian Aid, the Trust were able to provide rescue boats, life jackets and temporary shelter to vulnerable people, as well as food, shelter and other vital essentials.

PAKISTAN FLOODS

The Trust built thousands of homes, and distributed medical supplies and food parcels to those affected by the Pakistan floods.

In 2010, the Pakistan floods devastated 17 million lives across the country, destroying entire villages and causing the deaths of 1,600 people. Within days, the Trust responded to the disaster by building over 5,000 eco-friendly homes, provided medical supplies to women and children, and delivered food parcels to those in affected communities.

The Monsoon Accessorize Trust works with various charities to support those less fortunate, our preferred method of support is through education, healthcare and income generation.

EDUCATION FOR ALL FUND

The Monsoon Accessorize Trust are committed to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goal 4, to gain inclusive and equitable quality education for all. By educating children we give the next generation the tools to fight poverty and encourage them to be advocates for change.
A quality education lays the foundations for a child’s future and teachers are the catalysts who can make this happen. Equipping teachers to address the diverse needs of children and engage them in meaningful learning is an urgent necessity if we are to address the crisis in education in developing countries.

  • To gain access to quality basic education in the rural and urban areas.
  • To create a sustainable and innovative approach to tackle the issue of lack of education in rural areas.
  • To have a holistic approach in achieving your developmental objective.
  • To have an angle of environmentally friendliness to your approach.
  • To have the ability to show the theory of change and provide quarterly updates of progress/impact.
WORKING A WAY OUT OF POVERTY FUND

The goal of the project is to create a sustainable income generating activity which uses a participatory approach, strongly emphasising the local environment. Promoting women empowerment and ensuring that each aspect of the project management cycle puts women at the forefront.

  • To improve community capacities through increasing access to services and productive facilities.
  • To reinforce community resilience and social cohesion by promoting beneficiary participation, engagement and representation for self-reliance.
  • To promote sustainable income generating activities (and foster a culture of entrepreneurship) encouraging joint-venture businesses through community groups and private sector inclusion.
  • To facilitate increased household income for the wellbeing of the most vulnerable and marginalised beneficiaries.
COMMUNITY HEALTHCARE FUND

The fund’s main priority is to provide healthcare for mothers and children, and help break down the vicious cycle of inequity. This includes access to basic hygiene practices and sanitation, and nutritional care to help prevent stunting which affects millions of children across the world.

Better community health has immediate benefits. In the long term, these benefits translate into higher life expectancy, a more productive labour force, increased wages and savings and lower treatment costs, ultimately fuelling a cycle of growth and greater investments in the economy.

  • To provide access to basic healthcare for the most marginalised and vulnerable people in rural communities.
  • To strengthen community-level services, such as health workers and antenatal care.
  • To strengthen facilities-based care, including postnatal services for mothers and babies.
  • To increase immunisation services, including capacity, supply and demand.

Over the years, our colleagues and partners have organised a variety of creative and innovative fundraising events for the Trust, including cake sales, charity raffles, skydives and even fire-walking. Find out more here...
